BİSAM: The hunger threshold in Turkey surpasses 5,500 liras

Deniz Kılınç / Istanbul, June 15 (HNA) – Research Center of the United Metal Workers’ Union (BISAM) revealed that the hunger threshold in Turkey reached 5 thousand 557 liras, while the poverty threshold became 19 thousand 220 liras in May.

The amount of calories each family member should take to eat healthily differs and accordingly; the monthly equivalent of the food an adult male should consume for a healthy diet reached 1,501 liras and this number is 1,454 liras for an adult female, 1,587 liras for a young person aged between 15-18 years old and 1,015 liras for a child aged between 4-6 years old, according to the calculation made on BİSAM’s index figures compared to Turkish Statistical Institute’s May expenditure groups, item prices in 2003 and BİSAM Nutrition Pattern.

The research, stating that the cost of healthy nutrition to the total family budget is 5 thousand 557 liras, also underlines that this amount is the compulsory expenditure amount that the family in question should make only for food. Hence, when expenses such as education, health, accommodation, entertainment, heating, and transportation are included, the monthly expenditure amount of a family reaches 19 thousand 220 liras.

Milk and dairy products are the most important expenditure item for healthy nutrition

During this period, milk and dairy products constitute the highest cost group in daily expenditures for a healthy diet, with an expenditure requirement of 69.08 liras. According to the BİSAM research, the minimum amount of expenditure required for meat, chicken, and fish is 40.27 liras, 25.75 liras for vegetables and fruit, 11 liras for bread, 14.12 liras for fat and oil, 3.21 liras for eggs, and 6.25 liras for sugar, honey, jam, and molasses.
