London, Jan 17 (HNA) – The death toll from the earthquake that struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi earlier this week climbed to 73, the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) said on Sunday.

According to BNPB, over 800 people were injured in the quake and more than 27,800 were forced to leave their homes after Friday’s 6.2-magnitude earthquake.

The rescuers said an excavator was needed to save the girl and others trapped in collapsed buildings. Other images showed a severed bridge and damaged and flattened houses. TV stations reported the earthquake damaged part of a hospital and patients were moved to an emergency tent outside.

North of Majene, more than a dozen patients and staff are trapped beneath the rubble of a hospital that was flattened by the quake.

“The hospital is flattened – it collapsed,” said Arianto from the rescue agency in Mamuju city, who goes by one name.
