Istanbul, November 27 (HNA) – Faculty members in all academic units (29 departments and three institutes) of Boğaziçi University made a joint statement, announcing that the academics at the university were prevented from working by the Rector Naci İnci administration.
The process, which started with the appointment of Prof. Dr Melih Bulu to the rectorate position on January 2, 2021, by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, went on with the appointment of Naci İnci on August 21, 2021, has been going on for about two years. In this process, while disciplinary investigations were launched against dozens of academics, many others were suspended from the university by means of dismissal orders, not renewing their contracts and not having their courses approved.
In the joint statement of Boğaziçi University academics said, “We would like to express that we will not stand by as a spectator to the blatant usurpation of our young people’s rights to a good education and that we will continue to protest all unlawfulness and show the necessary reaction” and added:
“The administration also distorts the existing legislation, opens investigations against faculty members, does not renew the contracts of some of our faculty members on the basis of untrue news, keeps some of them waiting for their promotions for arbitrary reasons, and illegally prevents some from teaching or even entering the campus.”
Emphasizing that such practices seriously jeopardize the quality of the university as a good public university and the quality of education and research, faculty members said, “All the warnings we have made on this subject have been ignored.”
“While unqualified and non-transparent appointments continue, department heads who criticize these processes and bring lawsuits are dismissed for groundless reasons, and department heads elected by departments are not appointed,” said in the statement and added:
“It is our responsibility to both our students and their families, who work devotedly to provide them with a good future, to prevent these damages and public damage. We would like to express that we will not be a bystander to the blatant usurpation of our youth’s right to good education and that we will resolutely continue to object to all unlawfulness and show the necessary reaction.”
