Venizelos Gavrilakis: By acting as “Art Doctors” we play an essential role in connecting the past and future

Istanbul, January 4 (HNA) – By acting as “Art Doctors,” they play an essential role in connecting the past and future, making it possible for people to experience and learn from history firsthand, stated President of Venis Studios Venizelos G. Gavrilakis, Senior Expert Art Conservator And Restorer, answering the questions of Hermes News Agency (HNA).
1-First, could you briefly summarise the field you are working on within the framework of your specialisation, which forms the basis for you to be awarded the title “Art Doctor”?
My work in the field of conservation and restoration has earned me the affectionate title of “The Art Doctor.” This moniker reflects my comprehensive approach to treating historical artworks, particularly Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons and historical paintings, as well as historical artworks and antiquities. Just as a doctor assesses, diagnoses, and treats patients, I meticulously examine each artwork to identify its specific needs for preservation and restoration.
With over 30 years of study and hands-on experience in conserving and restoring priceless historical treasures, I have developed a deep understanding of the “secret language” of artefacts. Each piece tells its story—revealing its needs, challenges, and how far restoration should go. It is a journey through time, connecting the past, present, and future. The work of conservation and restoration is as delicate and precise as surgery performed by a doctor. As physicians treat the human body, conservators and restorers meticulously care for the “soul” of art and history.
Every decision in conservation and restoration adheres strictly to the core principles outlined in national charters and international organisations, always maintaining the highest standards of museum-quality care. My unwavering commitment to excellence and respect for these principles has earned me the nickname “The Art Doctor.”
With all these years of experience in the field of art and antiquities conservation and restoration, my expertise encompasses a wide range of techniques and materials, all rooted in traditional ancient methods that honour the integrity of the original work. I apply a combination of scientific analysis and artistic sensibility to assess the condition of each artwork, utilising advanced techniques such as X-ray, UV, Infrared, and Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) and many others, to visualise and evaluate the extent of wear, oxidation, and previous restoration attempts. Additionally, I often collaborate with global art research analysis centres to gain deeper insights based on the specific requirements of each project at VENIS STUDIOS, employing specialised scientific analyses of materials as needed.
In my role, I don’t merely restore artworks and antiquities, I also educate aspiring conservators and restorers, sharing knowledge on a global scale. My commitment to high standards and ethical practices, aligned with national preservation charters and cultural heritage organisations, has resulted in successful conservation projects that breathe new life into significant historical artefacts. This dedication to preserving our artistic legacy is why colleagues and clients alike have come to regard me as “The Art Doctor.” I strive to ensure that each restored piece is preserved for future generations and celebrated for its historical and cultural significance.
2-We know that the principles of your work at VENIS STUDIOS are based on four pillars: science, art, conservation and restoration. Can you tell us about these basic principles?
At VENIS STUDIOS, our guiding philosophy encapsulated in “The Science and Art of Conservation & Restoration” is built upon four fundamental pillars: science, art, conservation, and restoration. Each of these principles plays a vital role in our approach to preserving cultural heritage.
1. The Science:
Conservation and restoration science encompasses technical examination, documentation, and treatment of various artworks. Our primary goal is to improve the condition of each artefact by stabilising any issues related to its physical state and addressing surface disfigurements caused by deterioration or damage. At VENIS STUDIOS, we are committed to retaining the original materials while using the highest quality materials and the most thoughtful methods available. Our structured work plan includes the following phases for each project:

Art is fundamental to the conservation and restoration process. Our technical expertise is complemented by a deep artistic sensibility, enabling us to make informed decisions honouring the artist’s original intent. This artistic approach ensures that our interventions enhance the artwork’s overall visual and cultural significance and maintain its authenticity. By carefully considering each piece’s historical and aesthetic context, we strive to create restorations that are harmonious with the original work, allowing the true essence of the artwork to shine through. Our commitment to preserving the integrity of the artist’s vision is at the core of our practice, ensuring that every restored piece celebrates its past and is a testament to its enduring legacy.
3. Conservation:
Conservation is at the core of our mission at VENIS STUDIOS. It involves preserving artefacts in their current state and preparing them for future generations. Our practices are guided by strict ethical considerations and international standards, ensuring that we safeguard artworks from further deterioration while respecting their historical integrity. By focusing on preventive measures and proper care, we aim to extend the lifespan of each piece, allowing future audiences to appreciate the cultural and artistic heritage they embody. This commitment to conservation is integral to our approach as we strive to balance immediate restoration needs with long-term preservation goals.
4. Restoration:
Restoration is about revitalising artworks and breathing new life into them. It requires a profound understanding of historical techniques and materials. At VENIS STUDIOS, our goal is to enhance the authenticity and beauty of each piece while respecting its historical context and integrity. We maintain transparency about our methods and interventions, fostering a dialogue between the past and the present. Creating a connection between the artwork and the conservator-restorer. This connection bridges the historical significance of the artwork with contemporary appreciation. By allowing viewers to recognise both the original craftsmanship and the skilled restoration efforts, we ensure that each artwork continues to tell its story, engaging audiences with its rich heritage.
By integrating these four pillars, VENIS STUDIOS ensures a holistic approach to conservation and restoration, safeguarding our cultural heritage for future generations while honouring the artistry and history of each piece we work on.

Acting as “Art Doctors,” we strive to restore and conserve artworks and preserve their rich historical heritage and significance for future generations.
4-How do your relationships with the museums, art collectors and other institutions you work with develop? How do they choose you, and how do they reach you?
The relationships with museums, art collectors, and other institutions likely develop through a combination of reputation, trust, and mutual respect built over years of dedicated work in the field. My expertise and specialised skills in conservation and restoration make me a valuable resource for institutions looking to preserve and restore their art and antiquities.
Typically, these relationships are cultivated through referrals from satisfied clients, recognition within the art conservation community and through public showcases of his work, such as exhibitions or collaborations. Art collectors and institutions often choose VENIS STUDIOS based on the company’s proven track record, portfolio of past projects, and as a recognised experience and commitment to high-quality, ethical conservation practices.
Institutions and collectors usually reach VENIS STUDIOS through a variety of channels, including professional networks, referrals, conference events, and possibly online through our website or social media presence. In some cases, direct outreach or my team to prospective clients may also open doors to new partnerships, especially if they specialise in certain art or antiquities that match our areas of expertise.
5-There is an essential digital development on the agenda today: artificial intelligence. Does this development have anything to do with your area of expertise? Can it be?
While our work focuses on the preservation and conservation of cultural heritage using traditional and time-honoured techniques, technological advancements, including AI, have become invaluable in our field. These developments offer us new tools to study, analyse, and even uncover previously hidden aspects of historical artefacts, thereby enhancing the precision and efficacy of our conservation treatments.
AI and other emerging technologies enable us to gather and process vast amounts of data, which can lead to groundbreaking discoveries. With these tools, we can achieve a more accurate, scientifically informed approach to preservation, allowing us to conserve artefacts more faithfully and reveal unique historical insights that may otherwise remain obscured. The integration of AI is already transforming various areas of cultural heritage preservation as scientists and conservators collaborate to harness this powerful tool. This allows us to delve deeper into our understanding of artefacts and, ultimately, enrich our knowledge of human history.
6-We know that the basis of your field of work is primarily based on historical art products that have been brought to light. What are the developments in this field?
As a Senior Expert Art and Antiquities Conservator and Restorer at VENIS STUDIOS, our work centres on the preservation and restoration of historical artworks and antiquities that we have uncovered over time, the field of art conservation has evolved significantly, blending traditional techniques with cutting-edge scientific advancements, which is both exciting and transformative.
One of the most impactful developments is using non-invasive analytical tools, such as X-ray, fluorescence, multispectral imaging, and other techniques, which allow me to study the deeper layers of artwork without risking any damage. This technology helps reveal invaluable details about each historical art treasure’s materials, original methods, and history. Additionally, artificial intelligence has become an important tool, assisting us in analysing vast amounts of data to identify patterns in degradation and guide precise, informed conservation treatments.
At VENIS STUDIOS, we value a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach that involves scientists, historians, experts, conservators and restorers to ensure each project benefits from a broad perspective. This has led to sustainable and reversible conservation practices that protect the integrity of the artefacts. These advancements allow us to preserve historical pieces more accurately and deepen our understanding of the cultures and contexts they represent, making our work both meaningful and impactful.
7-In light of all these works we have focused on so far, could you tell us about the function of you and your art in shedding light on the future of humanity?
In my work at VENIS STUDIOS, the role of the conservator-restorer is, in many ways, akin to that of an “Art Doctor.” Just as a physician diagnoses and treats illnesses to sustain life, a conservator and restorer carefully examines, diagnoses, and treats the “ailments” of historical artworks to preserve their essence and integrity for future generations. This process requires a profound understanding of each piece’s physical and symbolic elements, making the conservator’s role critical in ensuring that cultural heritage is maintained in its truest form.
Our work is both scientific and deeply sensitive as we assess the needs of each artwork, identifying signs of deterioration or damage that might threaten its survival. Like doctors, we rely on specialised knowledge, including non-invasive analysis techniques and an understanding of historical materials, to “treat” these art pieces with minimal intrusion and maximal respect. This approach allows us to preserve the physical appearance of the piece and its cultural and historical significance, ensuring it remains a true representation of its time and origin.
By acting as “Art Doctors,” we play an essential role in connecting the past and future, making it possible for people to experience and learn from history firsthand. This connection fosters cultural awareness, empathy, and understanding, all of which are vital for humanity’s future. Each restoration contributes to a legacy, ensuring that art continues to educate, inspire, and shape future generations.
