Brighton, March 11 (HNA) – A brand new, full-length contemporary dance work from Brighton-born, British-Turkish choreographer Ceyda Tanc. Ceyda Tanc Dance to return to Theatre Royal on 16 May 2023, following their sell-out performance of KAYA in 2018.
A celebration of what it means to be female, KIZLAR is an aesthetically driven exploration of femininity, masculinity, strength, and vulnerability, creating a visually stunning dance work.
“KIZLAR celebrates women and explores what it means to be female in today’s society,” says Ceyda Tanc adding that:
“With my new perspective as a mother to a baby girl, I have been drawing on the experiences of women and girls of diverse ages & ethnicities, in the Brighton community to shape the vision for the work.”
Drawing on the virtuoso movements of male Turkish dancers with an all-female company, Ceyda Tanc’s unique movement vocabulary combines athletic contemporary movement with traditional Turkish folk dance, conveying striking shapes and strong, sensual energy.
Currently in production (Feb 2023) supported by Arts Council England, Brighton Festival, South East Dance, English National Ballet and The Studio, Brighton.
“Having had an incredible experience premiering KAYA at the Theatre Royal in Brighton Festival 2018, we are delighted to return to showcase the development of our work over the past 5 years and to reconnect with our local audiences” Ceyda Tanc added.
Performing dancers will be, Gemma Shrubb, Chloe Mead, Freya Simpson, Gabriella Sanders, Colette Kite and Georgia Marshall, with an original composition by Asta Hiroki wearing costumes designed by Holly Murray. The Design of the performance by Sand Interiors with Lighting by Georgia Godfrey.
Led by British-Turkish choreographer, Ceyda Tanc, the company create dynamic contemporary dance influenced by Tanc’s Turkish heritage. Ceyda’s work seeks to challenge traditional gender representation and highlight the intersection of cultures in modern Britain, embedding themes of feminism, ritual and ceremony.
